We’re all familiar with the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words”, and frankly, that’s a relief because my strength lies more in taking pictures than in writing! In my role as a professional headshot photographer, I have the immense pleasure of meeting a diverse array of professionals. Many clients approach me for author headshots to use for their PR campaigns, book releases and book covers – here are some key considerations to contemplate before booking yours.
WHAT MAKES A GOOD AUTHOR HEADSHOT?
For the perfect author headshot, ensure it aligns with your personal brand and book genre. Think about the mood of your book – a dark thriller would have a very different feel to romantic comedies.
Choosing your Background
For all of my headshots sessions, you have the option of choosing a plain background or a more natural, environmental setting. The decision is entirely yours and will depend on the available space at your home or your office. Some authors prefer portraits against a backdrop of books, while others prefer a simpler background avoiding distractions. During longer sessions I can accommodate both options, even incorporating lifestyle shots of you reading or sitting with your book.
“Alex made me feel utterly at ease”
Alex is wonderful. She made me feel utterly at ease – no mean feat. She listened to exactly what I was after, used the various spaces creatively and delivered promptly a set of lovely photos which can be used for all the various occasions I need. If you need author headshots done, I couldn’t recommend Alex more highly. I have also seen a number of her beautiful family portraits and she produced a glorious set of leavers’ photos at my youngest’s prep school last summer too. She is multi-talented and just lovely!

How much do Author Headshots cost?
As with all of my headshot photography, the price depends on the length of your session. I can offer shorter sessions from my home studio in Ardingly or can travel to your home or office, depending on your preference. As a general guideline, my headshots cost from £175 for a brief session including 3 digital files.
