In the ten years that I’ve been running my family photography business I’ve taken lots of family photoshoots at Balcombe Viaduct in West Sussex.
Balcombe Viaduct or Ouse Valley Viaduct?
Whether you know it as the Balcombe Viaduct or the Ouse Vallery Viaduct it’s a great and unusual location for family photography.
The viaduct carries the London to Brighton train line over the river Ouse – the trains can be heard rattling overhead when you are sitting underneath. The viaduct is located to the north of Haywards Heath and to the south of Balcombe. It’s only 10 minutes away from my house (in fact when I’m feeling super fit I’ve been known to run there!) and I’m often photographing children and families under the famous arches.
Family Photoshoots at Balcombe Viaduct
Here’s one of my favourite family photoshoots taken at the viaduct. It was pouring with rain when these photos were taken but we were able to take cover underneath. The children loved climbing on the arches – it’s actually quite a long way up for them but great for me as they sit relatively still!
This family are really good family friends. Dad asked me to take photos of him and his boys as a surprise for Mum’s birthday – we organised the whole shoot in secret and then Dad purchased a multi-aperture frame which the boys gave her on the big day.
Alex put us all at ease and took beautiful photos. She was relaxed, but utterly professional and I liked the way she asked for our ideas during the shoot (but had plenty of her own, which was great for us!). We are delighted with the pictures and more than happy to recommend Alex as a photographer. She will do a wonderful job for you.
I love to include dogs too!
I’ve photographed this lovely family several times, in fact I’m known as their own ‘personal photographer’! Theses photos were taken at the end of October but the arches provided shelter from the wind. We even managed to get Mae the dog up there too!
Here’s some more photos from the family shoot above showing the variety of pictures it’s possible to take at Balcombe Viaduct.
Parking at Balcombe Viaduct
I wouldn’t advise parking at Balcombe Viaduct, there’s a only small layby and very fast moving traffic on the main road. The best place to park is in the car park at Ardingly Resevoir – there’s a lovely walk across the fields (about 1km).
